05. How can I tell others about my weight loss surgery?

Telling your family and friends about your decision to have weight loss surgery is a big step – as the support of people closest to you is important on this journey.
Many people who have had surgery find that their family and friends not only support them, but in some cases, are inspired to also have surgery when they see the results!
Surgery will involve the people closest to you.
Having discussions even the at early stages and having support will help you along your journey.
Some important discussions will include:
- Explaining your WHY. Why are you deciding to have this surgery? And why you feel this is the best option for you.
- Having done your research is an important step to start positive discussions with family, friends and loved ones. Helping them understand it’s not an overnight decision, that you’ve done your research, and that you know this is the right decision for you.
- Don’t let people sway you. These conversations can sometimes get emotional depending on who you are talking to. So stay calm and listen to the feelings the person is sharing. Remember that this person cares about you and more than likely is just scared of the thought of you having surgery.
- Ask for support. After you share the news with your loved ones, tell the person what you need from them to be successful. It is vital that you have a support system on this journey and this is the perfect opportunity to ask for that support.
Weight loss surgery is a life changing commitment that has a high rate of success in treating obesity.
Having a strong support network will make the journey less stressful.
