Obesity is now recognised in Australia and internationally as a chronic disease with severe health and quality of life consequences.

It is known that people with obesity are 4.39 times, or 439% more likely to have diabetes, when compared to people with lower BMI.

Obesity can contribute to many related diseases – also known as “comorbidities”.

  • Depression
  • Asthma
  • Coronary Heart Disease
  • Hypertension
  • Kidney Disease
  • Multiple Types of Cancer
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Gallbladder Disease
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
  • Dyslipidemia

The risks of having multiple co-morbidities, or diseases are greatly increased when living with obesity.

Long term obesity can also result in increased mortality, or lower life expectancy.

Obesity is classified as having a BMI 30 and higher, with a normal weight classification being a BMI between 18.5 – 24.9.
